Granite Ventures is a San Francisco-based venture capital firm that began investing in 1992 as the early-stage venture capital group within Hambrecht and Quist, one of the most prominent technology-focused investment banks of its era. The firm became independent in 1998 and is headquartered at One Bush Street in San Francisco. Granite has invested over $1 billion across more than 100 private companies and approximately 250 investments, building a team of four Managing Partners: Chris Hollenbeck, Chris McKay, Standish O'Grady, and Eric Zimits. The firm focuses on early-stage technology companies in the United States, with domain expertise in cloud infrastructure and applications, mobility, and internet applications. The portfolio spans 102 companies, including 81 technology companies, 75 enterprise B2B companies, 47 software companies, and more than 25 SaaS companies. The firm leads rounds and takes active board roles, investing at seed through Series B stages with typical check sizes between $3 million and $10 million. The portfolio has produced seven IPOs and 67 acquisitions. Notable portfolio companies include Airbnb (IPO, travel marketplace), Marqeta (IPO, fintech card issuing platform), Anaplan (business planning software), HireVue (HR technology and video interviews, acquired), and Lucidworks (enterprise search and AI). Granite Ventures has been an active investor across multiple technology cycles for more than three decades. The firm does not maintain a public-facing website and appears to be in a later stage of its fund lifecycle, with no new investments reported in 2025, suggesting a focus on realizing its existing portfolio.
