Liberty Mutual Strategic Ventures

Liberty Mutual Strategic Ventures (LMSV) is the corporate venture capital arm of Liberty Mutual Insurance, founded in 2016 and based in Boston, Massachusetts. The fund invests in early-stage insurtech, fintech, and enterprise software companies shaping the future of insurance, with a focus on areas strategically relevant to Liberty Mutual's global, diversified property and casualty insurance operations. Managing Director Russ MacTough leads the team alongside Directors Josh Cohen and Dave DeSisto. The fund launched a $150 million Fund I in 2015 and followed with a $200 million Fund II in July 2024, bringing total committed capital to $350 million. LMSV primarily invests from seed through Series B with initial check sizes of $750,000 to $5 million, and leads rounds while also co-investing alongside other venture funds. The portfolio has grown to 43 investments including Trunk Tools (Series B, July 2025, construction AI), Pano AI (June 2025, wildfire detection), Roots Automation (Series B, October 2024, $22.2 million raised for insurance process automation), Blueprint Title, Crux, Driver, Edge Case Research, Homee, and Hyro. Investment focus areas span AI, data and automation, cybersecurity, energy transition, and mobility. The fund has achieved 4 exits, with Azibo the most recent in May 2025. LMSV operates within Liberty Mutual's broader Enterprise Strategy and Innovation function, giving portfolio companies direct access to one of the largest US insurance groups as a potential commercial partner, pilot customer, and distribution channel. The fund's focus on technology transforming insurance — from underwriting automation and claims AI to climate risk intelligence and mobility insurance — reflects the view that the insurance industry is in the early innings of a technology-driven reinvention.
